    I am the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) for The Cathedral School of St. Mary. I organise support for all children with SEND across the school. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Hi everyone,

I hope that you are all coping well at this strange time. If you do need some further support, I just wanted to make you aware of some that is on offer for you.

There is information on the Local Offer at; https://www.plymouthonlinedirectory.com/covid19/send which contains lots of useful resources to help wellbeing, anxiety and behaviour.

If you would like advice or support around effective behavioural strategies to help with the challenges posed by the school closures, PIAS (Plymouth Information, Advice and Support for SEND) have a team of dedicated facilitators skilled in a wide range of parenting programmes and behavioural strategies from birth to the teenage years. They are on hand to provide help, advice, support and a friendly ear from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday on 01752 258933 and select option 2.

If you are struggling for food and need an emergency food bank parcel, during this difficult time, please contact the council on 668000 and select option 4.  You will be given a reference number; this will enable you to collect your parcel (but remember to check the opening times of the food bank while you are on the phone). As you can imagine there is high demand so please only do this if you have no other way of feeding yourself and your family.

Most of the local supermarkets are putting together a food box, for around £35. If you go onto their website it is quite easy to order and they can deliver to you, however, remember that there is high demand for these and limited delivery slots, so make you order in advance.

Local churches are trying to help, when then can and if you are struggling it would be worth giving them a call to see if they can offer support.

Samaritans number is 116 123 - they can support if you are feeling depressed, extremely anxious and have nowhere else to turn.

MIND Can offer mental health support and can be contacted on tel:0300-123-3393

Shelter are offering support via their web page: https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice and can help with serious housing problems, (use this if you are due to be evicted or are struggling with rent, during this difficult time and when all other avenues have been exhausted with your landlord).

Finally, don't forget that there are people in school, during normal school hours, who would always try to help or signpost to someone who could: 01752 265270 or email; ksargison@csosm.org.uk or your child's teacher. We would be happy to help.

Take care for now,

Karen Sargison

At The Cathedral School of St. Mary, we believe that all children and young people are entitled to an
education. This education should enable them to make progress so that they:

  • achieve their best
  • become confident individuals living fulfilling lives
  • make a successful transition into adulthood, whether into employment, further or higher education or training (p.81 Code of Practice, 2014)
Click the link below to find out how the Local Authority expects schools to meet the needs of children with SEND and their families. This is called the ‘Local Offer’.

Please take a look at our Special Educational Needs Information Report (SENIR), below, for more information on;
  • who to contact if you think your child may have SEND
  • how we support parents, carers and pupils with SEND in school
  • specialist services available
  • transition into Foundation Stage in our setting and/or into secondary school
To help pupils understand what the Coronavirus is and how this may impact them as well as what happens when the school is closed and what they are expected to do, please access these really useful social stories;
To help pupils that find it difficult to understand language, express themselves verbally or need to know what order they will need to complete tasks in and what the reward is if they complete these, please use this fantastic resource to help you!
If you need any help with behaviour management or helping pupil's self esteem during this period, please access these brilliant, well laid out resources. They are old and the phone number is, I believe, no longer valid....but they are really useful!
