 Our theme in Summer 2 will be...

Topic: Castles –Towers, Turrets and Tiaras!

Science: Plants

 

 

Mathematics

In Summer 2 we will begin by looking at 3D shapes and then we will spend 3 weeks looking at the measurement of capacity, temperature and time and recapping problems involving money. In the last few weeks we will consolidate our learning through problem solving and investigations.

 

English 

Daily Read Write Inc. sessions will continue. To support our topic on Castles we will spend our class English sessions developing our reading and writing skills through units based on a story called ‘The Paper Bag Princess’ and non-fiction books about ‘Castles’. We will also be reading and performing poems and will write our own poems about dragons.

 

RE

Our first unit in Summer 2 is Pentecost and Mission. During this unit, the children will focus on the promise Jesus made to his apostles to send them the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was sent to enable the apostles to spread the word of God, across the world, uniting all people in one Church. Throughout this unit the children will think about promises they have made or could make that would unite us as one.   

 

 

Topic, Computing and DT

In topic we will use our history detective skills to find out about castles and forts. We will look at different types of castle and learn about the history of The Royal Citadel and Plymouth Castle. In DT we will make a castle model (please collect old cereal boxes and kitchen roll tubes).

 

Science and Art

In science this term we will be looking at plants. We will look at different plants and their habitats. We will also look at different types of seeds, how they disperse, germinate and grow into plants.  We will investigate what plants need to grow and look at the lifecycle of plants. We will develop our artistic skills through sketching plants and seeds.

 

PE

We will be developing our skills in striking and fielding and athletics.

Topic - Let's go to China!
Science - Chinese Inventions

 

 

Mathematics

We will begin in the first 2 weeks looking position, movement and time. Then we will look at efficient methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division where we will be consolidating the methods we know and discussing when they are best used. Following that we will be focusing on problem solving where we will carefully consider which operation we should use and select the appropriate method.

 

English 

Daily Read Write Inc. sessions will continue. In class we will develop our reading and writing skills through units based on a book called ‘The Ugly Dumpling’, a story which we will compare to the traditional tale, ‘The Ugly Duckling’.

 

RE

Our RE unit this term is Easter. During this unit, the children will discuss and further respond to the story of the resurrection and what impact the resurrection had on the lives of ordinary people who witnessed it. The children will explore the events of the first Easter Sunday and find out what we remember during the Easter season.

 

Topic, Computing and DT

In topic we will be developing our geography skills through a study unit on China! We will find out where it is, what it is like there and how the culture differs to our own here in Plymouth. If there is anyone who has been there and would like to share some of their experiences with the class, please do get in touch and we can arrange for you to come in! We will be cooking Chinese food which we are really looking forwards to.

 

Science and Art

In this unit on Chinese inventions we will look at four inventions from China: gunpowder, the compass, paper and block printing, and consider how these have impacted on the world. We will take a close look at how paper was made and have a go at block printing for ourselves! 

 

PE

We will be developing our skills in striking and fielding and learning about different dances from around the world.
